hi, i have been a distance person ever since i was in jr. high. i was not good when i was in 7th grade but i have gotten better each year. towards my junior year my coach would put me and a sprinter together to practice on 400s. i have always done the mile and the 800. and my junior year i started the doing the mile relay after the mile at track meets. i have also been doing the 2 mile and i have enough speed to do the 2X800 i was 3rd leg. this year is my senior year and i cannot decided what i want to do in track. Im sticking to the mile cause that is my favorite race besides that i want to go for the 400 since i believe i have enough speed but i am unsure if that will throw off my distance. help! -thanks

I would sit down and disusss this with your coach. The event that you compete in may be decided based on need of the team. Maybe there are a lot of good 400 runners on the team, but not too many good distance runners so you would be needed there or vise versa. I ran the mile my first three years and the 2 mile senior year. Our good 2 milers graduated the previous year.
It also sounds like you want to possibly double up in the events. Your coach should know the general event order at meets so you can see if this is possible. Events could be back to back. Your performance in the second race could be decreased due already racing.
It could be difficult to train for a 400 and 1600 at the same time. There are probably different coaches for each one and you would have to split your time up, maybe on days of long runs go with the sprinters then run the distance on your own after practice. This can be stressful / difficult and may miss out on some team comradery.
So I would discuss with your coach.

Thank you. Your reply helps me think a little about how my track season will go. The one problem is that i don't really know which coach to talk about.
My coach that has been my coach me since my freshman year is no longer coaching track. Last year a new coach came in but she worked mainly with the sprinters, this year this coach as well as another new coach are coming in. I am unsure if they will know what is right for me since they are both new to coaching track. Any suggestions?
