Hi Everybody,
I am a 38 year old,5'11" 230 LBS, male, muscular and have always been into strength/burst training. Running has never come easy for me. Last year I had a cervical fusion (years of heavy lifting/combat sports). I started cycling last year but developed an acute herniated disc at the level of C6-7. I want to run a marathon. It is a task that is on my bucket list. Running a marathon will be an accomplishment that is opposite to any previous activities I am been involved in. Currently, I am developing my base. At times my neck is a bit stiff but I have been careful not to bounce and waste energy as well as limit impact. Not knowing how to train, I started reading articles and came across this site. I like the idea of low heart rate training to build an aerobic base as well as limit the potential for injury. I would also like to test my limits occasionally to view my progress but have read it may be detrimental. I have found my max HR to be 193 with sprints (400's) and intese cycling). It has been about 5 weeks of regular running for base training. My goal is to complete 10 weeks of base training before bumping up to a 16 week marathon program. During base training should I continue with low HR training? Should I stay away from race (vs myself ) sessions? Winter is approaching...I prefer outdoor training. Should I avoid treadmills or include them during periods of inclement weather? In total I will have 6.5 months of training before my April 5th Marathon (2 days before my 39th)...is it too soon or should I try for a 1/2 marathon? I train with a HR monitor and am interested in learing more about the science of training. Where can I learn more? Lastly, does anybody believe I will remain a clydesdale by marathon time (>200 LBS) as I am currently 230 lbs with around 12% BF? Not that it matters just curious.

I would say you have a good approach. I wouldn't do anything intense for a while. Stay focused on building your base without injury and developing your aerobic system. This will really try your patience but it will pay off. You really don't need to do anything intense in preparing for your first marathon. Especially in your situation. Just concentrate on developing the ability to withstand the mileage and building endurance. You can work on speed later.
