Whey protein is the best; no unwanted side effects, and it gets you the protein you need. I recommend the chocolate flavor ;). Oh, and don't listen to the gym weenies who have it twice a day; once after the workout is enough provided you eat a balanced diet with sufficient protein.

I use protein supplements just to increase my protein intake as I'm usually in a rush all day.
If you training for a marathon or endurance event you should be looking at taking in 1.5 x you body weight in Kg for your muscle repair. I heard you could only take in roughly 40grams of protein in one sitting also.

As for creatine, it increases water retention in the muscles, making your muscles look bigger, but also helps in sustaining the number of reps you can put in.
The water also will lead to increased body weight, obviuosly if your running a marathon an extra 6 or 7 pounds is probaly going to have a deterimental effect.

If your starting a new exercise routine, changing training or coming back form a long injury I was also recommend L Glutamine as it can keep thus muscle aches to a minimal and is supposed to aid in muscle recovery.
