Post subject: Any chance at entering Boston? Posted: Wed Jan 04, 2006 4:27 pm |

I recently ran a marathon (Honolulu Marathon Satellite Race) in 2:59:57 with an official championchip time. I would like to run in Boston in April. My time qualifies me but the only problem is that it was on a course that is uncertified. That's the problem, i am in Iraq and have no chance of running in a certified race before April. I managed to get my R&R leave at the right time, but I don't know if the BAA will even let me into their race. I've sent 2 emails to their registration office but haven't heard back. I'm still holding out hope that they were just taking some time off during the holidays.
So what does the collective think, is there any chance that Boston will grant me a waiver and allow me to race? Or am I simply wasting time? Do any of you wise runners have any advice or experience that might help my cause?
Thanks
Joe

There's been a lot of special consideration given to our military folks in difficult situations as of recent in the racing community. You're certainly well enough past the qualifying time. If there was a time that BAA would give special consideration, this would be it. Good luck - I hope it works out.

They could probably care less if you were in the military. I think they should make special considerations for military folks. After all those folks defend the freedom that the racing directors have.
The Boston Marathon is over rated anyways. There's plenty I have run which I enjoyed more. If they don't let you enter, you didn't miss much in my opinion.
I hope they are more professional and respond to your email in a timely fashion.

I would try your best to get in. It is one of the few marathons with the history and course support like this. Some people don't like big crowds and you have to be ready to wait for it to start but the overall experience is what you should embrace. Just think of all the work and time you put in just to qualify, now go enjoy it!
Best of luck getting in!
