Hello,
I am training for my first Marathon on May 4. The race course is very flat and fast. Most of my training is done around where I live and it is very hilly. On my long runs I focus on keeping a slow steady pace climbing and descending. But on my shorter runs I tend to attack the hills with a mountain bikers mentality. My question is should I drive to some flatter geography for some of my training? Or am I just worrying about nothing?
I am currently up to 17 miles on my long slow runs.
Thanks,
Greg

The thing that gets you going from hilly training courses to a flat marathon is that the continuous use of the same muscle groups will tend to eat away at you, mostly your hamstrings. If you can find a relatively flat course, I would recommend you get one or two of your long runs on it, just to get some muscle memory for that feeling. For the most part, however, hilly course training will be good preparation for flat races.
