Hi All, I am new to running. I run around 15mpw, and recentley bought a pair of Nike Shox. They feel comfortable and provide the needed support. I wore them in a 5k at the weekend and they where great. I have registered for a half marathon in March and i am traing in the Nike Shox... Are they acceptable for this use ?? How often do I need to replace my training shoes?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Andrew. Liverpool, England.

its a good question and i guess that its one that u have to find out due to personal feel and experience. im not 100% sure if they are the ideal running shoe but then again ive never tryed them. One of my mates had them for a while and didnt like them for training but he thought that they were good for walking. like i said...personal feel

take it easy

I have never bought shox for running. I alway stick to either asics, saucony, or mizuno. I did buy shox for basketball and they worked pretty good and felt comfortable, but personally they the running ones look very uncomfortable. Maybe if you had a narrower foot.

The Shox are OK if you are a truly neutral runner with a high arch and no overpronation issues. I see a lot of people in our store who have had problems with their knees or arches because the Shox don't offer much medial support. The best shoe on the market is the one that gives you the proper support and feels best to you. Remember the good running shoes will start in price around $90 and go up. The $150 shoes aren't neccessarily better than the $90 shoes, it just depends on your personal needs biomechanically. Always try on at least 4 or 5 shoes from different brands to help you decide on which ones feel and fit the best.

It's all about you! :-)

Shox are ok if you are running upto 15mpw or slightly more as you mentioned. Should also be good enough for short distance races. I tried many shoes in my last 24 yrs. running experience with many good and cofortable shoes. It all depends on the training and the circumstances plus the milage p/wk. Also you need to replace your runners only depending on your milage and competitions you are taking part. I've beeen very much concerned about my runners and outfits and had asked many professional runners. Every one has got their own choice according to their own comfort and situation. My personal preference for long distance or even for short distance training and competitions would be asics(gel Kayano). They really are very cofortable in long and short run training, races. But again, someone mentioned above that you really need to have 100% of your personal experience and it may take some time. Best of luck for your half marathon.

Nevered liked th shox, but it depends on your prefences and running biomechanics.

Pesonally prefer Kayanos for long runs, and base rate runs and I usually do my tempos, speedwork and races in Mizuno Wave Nirvava 2's as I seem to go quicker in them. Athough i find them a little narrow for my toes.

if you feel comfortable and they work I'd go with it
if you start getting more miles in, i'd go to a shop where they have people who can fit a good running shoe like an asic or mizzuno
i really think shox are more for style/walking rather than running

bad comment.
shin splints are caused by poor running style and lack of strength more than just your pronation or shoe type.

Nike Shox are not a good motion control shoe. Meaning that they do not transfer energy from the back to the front of the shoe very efficiently, which is something important for distance runners or even those with chronic knee/foot pain. Hope this helps.

You are right, shin splints are caused by poor running style and maybe lack of strength. They are also caused by change in running surface, intensity and duration of activity, and shoe type. Shoes also play a huge role in MTSS (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome). Nike Shox naturaly cause the runner to have a poor running motion. With heel strike, the outside, or lateral edge of the heel strikes the ground first. Since there is a shock or spring there, it springs the whole foot over and slams it into supination, not pronation. While the foot slams over onto the medial shock, they cause the knee to 'buckle' or translate lateraly, causing knee pain. Basicaly, all I am saying is that Nike Shox are ok to walk around in, but are terrible for your feet, knees and hips or basically your whole lower body. I would recomend not running in Shox Ever, Shox are bad for running.

Amen to that brother! Sticking to asics, saucony or mizuno will save your feet, legs and hips! Nike Shox are bad for your whole body. I just did a biomechanical video study on Shox and found video proof that they are terrible. Plus, testimonies from athletes and our professor, who worked for years with runners and their gait, all say that Shox are bad for you, or that they are experiencing pain while wearing them.

I like to think,,,the shoe must fit the foot! Everyone has a preference...trial and error...of course you do not want to spend money over and over again for the wrong shoe...Certain stores have MAJOR shoe-buying support where you can try on shoes and actually run on a machine that might help determine what will be best for YOU. Best Wishes+

I know it's been a while since this post began, but I just wanted to add that I too have found that saucony have been the best for long distance running... I recently (as in a week ago) purchased Nike Shox, thinking that I was doing the right thing to protect my knees... I could not have been more wrong... Both of my knees have been severly injured to the point that I cannot do any cardio and walking is very painful. I ran 4 miles in the brand new Nike Shocks last Monday for the 1st and last time... Dr. Appointment today. I should have stayed with old faithful... My Saucony's. I don't know what I was thinking... The right show is always subjective based on the person and the activitiy. I do not recommend them for long distance running...They may be a great match for someone else, my personal experience was not a good one.

Second that. I've been running in Shox for 3-4 weeks and I'm totally injured. Shin Splints, Knee injury, Hip injury. I'm ditching the SHOX and never buying them again. I'm going to go with saconny.
